Why should you go on holiday to Africa to indulge in a safari, when there is one right out the back door? It is a common misconception that you can see everything in a zoo that you can see while on a safari. Comparing the both of these is the best way to come up with a clear decision.

We’ll start with the Zoo. Money probably wont be that much of an issue. Although you’re not actually in the wild you can see some of the wild’s most amazing animals and they are just behind a sheet of glass. The chance to see these animals is rare, but a zoo offers this chance to everybody, in some cases you can actually interact with these animals (probably not the dangerous ones). A safari is a rather long way away. Well at least the zoo is only a short drive away, a Safari could be a 10 hour flight. The fact that these animals are at your fingertips also offers an exciting, enjoyable and educational experience for everyone, taking your children couldn’t be easier.

So now let’s take a look at the Safari. It is very difficult to describe just how truly stunning these holiday really are, they top almost any other holiday. A Safari holiday offers people the chance to embark on a once in a lifetime adventure into the plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya or the Serengeti in Tanzania. The chance to see these animals in their true habitat and to experience life like they do. Staying in a resort knowing that there is a lion or a rhino just outside the door is a magnificent feeling. If you do consider splashing out the money for this you wont be disappointed, but you will have to leave the kids at home. You will hear astonishing stories that your guide will tell you about and some of them are considered luxury holidays.

Think carefully when you go to the zoo the next time, the more you see these animals in captivity the more you will want to see them in the wild, you never know you might end up wanting a Kenya safari!

The thing with going on safari here is that you will be able to see the “Big Five”. The name Big Five was originally coined by hunters because these animals were supposed to be the hardest game to hunt and find.

The proud pride owner the Lion. This powerful animal is only the second of the big four cats, before the tiger. Lions in general are keystone predators which means they hunt and take down their own food, rather than scavenge, although if the opportunity arises they will take it. In some strange and interesting cases, the Lion has been known to attack people, and sometimes it even has stalked Humans as food.

The ever majestic African Elephant. The one main thing about the elephant is it’s sheer and complete size, this animal reaches an impressive 5 and a half tonnes, and can grow taller than 3 metres. An elephant has 4 molars for teeth and they are each 12 inches long, and weigh about five kilograms. One of the amazing things about the elephant is that the tusks can grow up to 2 and a half metres long.

Then there is the Cape buffalo. This animal is one of the preys of lions that are actually pretty good at defending themselves; they have even been known to kill lions as well. The Cape buffalo is regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Mara; it is a very short temper and is reported to have killed about 200 people every year.

The Black Rhinoceros. This well armoured and large beast has in a way been wrongly named, this was because the White Rhino has been wrongly named as well. The Black and the White Rhino are practically indistinguishable by colour. White in the White Rhino’s name was actually a mistranslation of “Weit” in Dutch. This word actually means “wide” because the White Rhino had a long square like lip, whereas the Black Rhino has a pointed lip.

Finally the Leopard. This cat is the smallest of the 4 Big Cats, but this does not at all mean it’s the slowest. Although this cat is the smallest of the bunch, this feline can reach speeds of 36 mph and make a vertical jump 3 metres up. The Leopard is slightly different to the other big cats, because it is regularly spotted swimming and is a very good tree climber.

So if you would like to go and see the Big Five then why not try Kenya holidays, Tanzania holidays or Zambia holidays. You will find them around these key locations.
