Carrying on with the list of the best castles in Wales is the next selection of Castles that you should visit if you are on one of those family days out.

Gwydir Castle

This castle is located in the really nice area of Snowdonia and was built by a man known as Howell Coermore in 1365. Coetmore was the commander of the longbow men at the Battle Of Poiters. The castle was originally home to the Wynn baronets who were descendants of the Kings and Princes of Gwynedd.

The war Of The Roses hit hard on England and Wales and after this war Meredith Whynn who was a strong supporter of the King started to rebuild the castle. It was again refurbished in the 1540’s and was not touched again until 1828.

In recent years the Prince of Wales opened the newly refurbished dining room from the 1640’s in 1989.

Caerphilly Castle

The castle itself was built very close to a location that was previously used as a Roman fort and work started on it in 1268. This castle actually covers a huge thirty acres of land making it the largest castle in Wales. This castle was only built to show the Anglo-Normans power and it did this as no person would go anywhere near it.

A force of men over ten thousand strong actually attacked the castle in the 14th century and this is when the castle was almost destroyed. The castles defences were somehow still intact.

The 15th century saw the castle kept in reasonable condition with no real refurbishments happening until the late 1700’s.

If you are into your history or are interested in either of these castles then why not take one of those UK family holidays UK to go and check them out. One of the best ways you can experience these castles is through a tour, although many people think they are boring there are many tour guides that go the extra mile.

Many people in the UK are considering ‘staycations’ this year, instead of jetting off for sun drenched holidays in the Canaries or the Costa del Sol. Staying at home and taking advantage of the many interesting destinations that are within easy reach is becoming increasingly appealing as people try to save money and lessen their carbon footprints.

One destination that is proving increasingly popular is Scotland. And one of the reasons that many people like to visit Scotland is its history.

Scotland has a wealth of ancient and often bloody history. There have been many battles on Scottish soil and the country is littered with ancient castles and grand homes. During the second world war many stately homes and castles were used for troops and hospitals. Some became damaged and run down leading to their demolition. During the 1960′s it was sad to see around one large house demolished somewhere in Scotland every week.

Luckily this practice came to an end but property owners were faced with huge maintenance and repair costs. Many have now been restored into functioning homes and hotels like the magnificent Glenapp Castle hotel which was acquired by hoteliers in 1994. Extensive restoration has turned this Victorian castle into a popular and luxurious five star hotel.

Many Scottish castles are nothing more than ruins, which isn’t surprising when you consider their age and history. Castle Sween is one such ancient castle. This castle was originally built in the 11th or 12th centuries and was names after a Dane called Sueno. Robert the Bruce captured the castle in 1315.

To make the most of any visit to a Scottish castle it is useful to have some knowledge of the castle history. This will really bring your visit to life as you picture the people who lived, loved, worked and died in the castle.

I can recommend a tour of ancient Scottish castles and monuments as truly fantastic and memorable holiday experience.

When flying from Edinburgh or Glasgow I always book my Edinburgh Airport Parking or my Glasgow Airport Parking space in advance as this always gives me savings of up to 60%.
