Exploring Lanzarote in the Canary Islands
Some islands offer little more than beaches and sunshine. But Lanzarote in the Canaries has loads for visitors to do and see. Whilst also featuring an excellent selection of Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments for visitors to select from.
This small island is located in the Atlantic Ocean many hundreds of miles south of mainland Spain. So creating a climate that is similar to a continual Spring – with little rainfall and temperatures almost constantly in the 20´s (degrees Celsius). These conditions are like a magnet for those living in northern European countries such as the UK and Germany – where they enjoy little in the way of sunlight for many months of the year.
Lanzarote is best known for its spooky volcanic interior – created by years of seismic activity. Which has left the island pockmarked with huge craters and peaks and plastered in a thick layer of black lava. Although these volcanoes are all now dormant.
Visitors tour the park here on coaches which enable them to view nature’s destructive work up close. Before disembarking at the visitor centre where wardens demonstrate the geothermal power still locked beneath the earth’s surface. By pouring water into bore holes which is then expulsed in jets of steam.
Away from the volcanic region Lanzarote boasts loads of beautiful beaches.
And whilst some of these are located within the main resorts the best and most natural require a little more exploration. Such as the strip of white sand beaches known collectively as Caleton Blanco which line the road to Orzola. The small ferry part in the north of the island from where tourists can hop over to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa. And the impressive sweep of beach at Famara on the wilder North West coast.
All of these impressive sights can be explored very easily as Lanzarote is a small island and car hire here is cheap. Starting at around €90 per week for a standard two door model. The roads outside of the main resorts are quiet and easy to use too. Drivers need to be over 23 years of age to hire a car on the island and must also present their driving licence and passport.
When’s the best time to visit? Lanzarote can be enjoyed all year round. But many locals believe that the best period is autumn. As the weather is still very warm but the crowds of summer have long since subsided.
