Ryan asked:

Im 18 years of age and thinking of taking a summer/autumn trip to france. Im not a beachy drink type of person although i like the occasional drink or two, but i would love sight seeing and trips, picture taking, group tours ect. Could you tell me a idea place in france for me to explore for 7 days and could anyone reccomend me any books about things to do in france and places to go. Also would love to have maps of france to explore on cycle hire’s. Anything of the sort of information would be great. Thanks in advance, Ryan.

If you are thinking of cycling I would explore the Loire Valley. It is a large area in central France and easily cyclable because reasonably flat. It follows the course of that stately river that ends up in the Atlantic. It’s central part is famous the world over for all the Renaissance castles with stunning gardens that were built there and in some towns there are medieval forteresses, cathedrals, wonderful museums with medieval tapestries and antiques, paintings, or are on a theme like the History of the horse and chivalry through the ages; Leonardo da Vinci’s house with models of the machines that he designed etc… .. It is a wine producing area and the weather is gentle at that time of the year, with the grape harvest taking place in September.
For good guide books Dorling Kindersly are well designed, full of pictures and diagrams, easy on the eye, with excellent information about the major places to visit. The Michelin guides are also good giving you planned routes to follow with extensive descriptions of where to stop and what to see.Michelin also do very detailed maps. You can order them on line from Amazon.

You will find masses of information on the net about the Loire Valley simply by googling it. Many Americans make the mistake of believing that you can do the Loire and all its castles in two days: In fact you cannot rarely do more than two a day, so you have to be selective.
There are some organised tours leaving from the main towns, such as the town of Tours, or one can also use local transport.

Have a good trip and enjoy!
