my 17 week puppy appears to suffer from travel sickness in the car?
dyslexia asked:
She doesn’t seem nervous of the car itself, I think it is the motion. Drools excessively and finally vomits. I’ve had moderate success with giving her a hide chew to distract her and someone has suggested homeopathy. Any suggestions? I gave her one Ipecac 6C tablet 20 mins before 30 min journey with not much success.

yes go for a short drive to start and as he gets older make the journeys longer he will eventually get used to it
I have a flat coated retriver, I remember when she was a puppy she used to car sick. I think it is something she will grow out when she becomes older. Trying open a window near to let some fresh air in. Becareful about letting her eat for she travels. If she begins to panic it may be useful to have someone in the back of the car with her to stroke and calm her down. If she doesn’t grow out it then you could consult a vet. You could also try little journey to like a park or something so she can get used to travelling around
the best thing to do is talk to your vet, y acan give em a call and they will discuss over the phone, they will be able to advise you and what to get for your puupy with the best result
It may not be something the dog will grow out of. Don’t feed her before the voyage. You may give short breaks and give her small amounts of water from time to time if the voyage is long.
I had a golden retriever which had the same problem. Vomiting got less frequent, but didn’t stop completely. Not feeding him before the voyage helped.
Short drives to start with and get a small piece if Malachite (lovely stripy green stone from healing crystal shop/eBay wherever) and put it on her collar. Malachite sorted my daughters travel sickness.
(Aslo dyslexic, spell check on the blink!)
my dog does this still and she’s 6 but luckily shes a yorkie…..if its a short journey put her on your lap and open the window they like fresh air…and you can also get sickness tablets.
good luck!
My dog did this too as a puppy, and she grew out of it. I wouldn’t give her anything to eat before riding in the car or while in it, just makes more of a mess to clean up! Perhaps if you take breaks in the car trips, stop and take her out for a few minutes before continuing, you can avoid the sickness altogether until she gets a bit older. If she doesn’t seem nervous, it is likely just motion sickness and it’ll stop when she’s older.
start with smaller journeys and gradually make them longer and stop in between to let her have a bit of a breather too hope you have your doggy seat belt too as i know of a local lady who was booked by the police as her dog was not resrained with a seatbelt ………good luck
Both of my dogs have had travel sickness as puppies but they both grew out of it. Invest in some of those training pads and put one under their mouth when you see it about to happen.
There will be a homoeopathic remedy which will work, perhaps the one you have tried has not been administered correctly.
When you use homoeopathic remedies it must be at least half an hour after food and food must not be taken for at least half an hour afterwards. If the tablets are not soft tablets, they must be crushed between two teaspoons before you give it to your puppy. If you administer the tablets whole, it will take several hours to get into the bloodstream. You must never touch the tablets, just tip a tablet from the phial and into the cap. If it is a soft tablet, open your dogs mouth and drop it in. Or try the following.
ALBUMEN WATER WORKS EVERY TIME IT NEVER FAILS. When I have told my friends about albumen water they have laughed and ignored my advice until all else has failed. When in desperation they have tried this it works EVERY TIME.
Beat the white of an egg with a teaspoon full of glucose powder and two teaspoons of cooled boiled water. A few drops of brandy may be added in the animal is distressed.
Give this to your puppy about half and hour before you travel. Do it on the next three or four occasions.
