How much spending Money do you recommend for a week long Europe trip?

Maddie Watson asked:

Over spring break we are planning a nine day trip to europe. We are visiting France, Florence, and Rome. Breakfeast and dinneer are prepaid but I must pay for my lunch. All the hotel costs and subway tickets, airfair, everything is prepaid. Basically I’m asking how much spending money I should bring a long for shopping and souveiniers. Thank you!

France is rather a big country. Your expenses might vary depending on whether you plan to explore the beautiful countryside or if you’re just going to be in major cities such as Paris. Since most of your major expenses are prepaid, you can probably safely get away with between €30 and 50 per day. That would allow you nice lunches and some nice souvenirs/shopping. You can eat lightly at lunchtime, however, and save plenty. Most restaurants offer lunch specials that are really reasonably priced, or you can go to a market and assemble a fun urban picnic of cheese, sausage, bread, pastries, etc. Get a carton of juice or other beverage, take it all to a park or square, feast and people-watch.
