21 comments to any tips for travelling around sicily?
First and foremost when traveling overseas, Inform Your embassy Where you are going and for how long, Give then a complete itinerary. The cabs are the best way to get around, locals do offer rooms for rent.
Locals are however reluctent to except reservations more then 2 days prior. If adventurous simply show up at the door. OR you can via your travel agent rent a Vila. But stay away from the tourist hotels, not a good way to soak-up the people and culture.
For general sightseeing, we recommend the periods October through November and March through June. For skiing on Mount Etna, late January and early February are best. If you’re a dedicated vacationer who can’t get enough sunshine and beaches, we recommend June through September. Remember, however, that July, August and the first two weeks of September are extremely hot, and bear in mind that almost everybody in Italy goes on vacation in August, making for crowded beaches during that month.
I cannot believe the number of stupid answers -

I’m Australian ,Born in Palermo ( 1954 )
Austrian parents ,Grew up in Malta .
To answer your legitimate question …
I first need to know what kind of person
you are ,and what you expect from your trip .
Sicily ,is not small ( 9 Provinces ) all different
from each other in attitudes , food , history ,people
and so on…
In any case if I were you , I wouldn’t stay in a big city
like for instance Palermo or Catania .
Go for a day trip ( Bus ) then back .
want to see Palermo =stay in Mondello or Sferracavallo .
Want to see Trapani = Stay in Erice or Alcamo marina
Siracusa – Messina = Are small towns fairly clean
with many options of sight seeings ,including
Taormina .
For the rest …As I said : I don’t know what you are after
Come to China instead. I love it here and the people are so friendly and welcoming that I can’t think of anywhere else in the world that I want to go to now.
A week is not a lot of time…. there is so much to see and do in the California of the Mediterranean!
You may be flying into Palermo…. Explore the city – it’s magical. The take a train or bus to Marsala to enjoy the sea, the wine and the slat pools at sun set. Go on down to Agrigento (take an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun) and visit the Valley of the Temples – it’s 100X’s better than what you’ll find in Greece and the food is so much better!! Then take the long trip to Noto – the best in Sicilian Baroque. The sea there is inviting and the food out of this world (try the tiny tomatoes for near by Pachino. The head up to Siracusa to see the out door theater and the archaeological museum. Then move on up to Catania – the opra house, the food sea and night life!!! And if you have time go up to the Etna and visit the tallest active vulcano in the Med. Finally – to the province of Messina to visit Taormina…. a dream village!
I told you that a week wouldn’t be enough!!!
Don’t do as I did years ago, and stand in the sea so that the locals could not throw little bombs into the waters to kill the fish. Actually, it wasn’t the locals, it was the Mafia. Also, get to know the women, and if you know any Italian, offer to write their letters to their husbands in Germany. Also, take very careful note of the wonderful way children are treated. Don’t bother with sightseeing, that is not very important.

Yeah dont go to Sicily go to Sorrento instead far nicer and much more to do!
Watch out for the MAFIA
Don’t bother going up Etna, not much to see (especially in the mist) and the shops are tacky.
Walk around the back streets of Syracuse.
Bring a lupara!
Don’t wear a Leeds scarf.
Hmm… Sicily is way more fun in Summer, but you can still look at Mount Etna
Don’t travel alone
watch out for the godfather
Watch out for the mafia
dont upset the Mafia…
