For how long would I be able to travel on a shoestring, down thru Central America on about £4000?

Vix asked:

Assuming I want to stay for a while in places i fall in love with and chill on the cheap in a hostel, just reading a book and surviving on one cheese sandwich a day, but also spend some time doing fun stuff here and there like windsurfing, snorkeling, canoeing…
Has anyone done anything like this, and have any nice tips or stories? Or any advice would be great!

You should budget for being robbed at least twice.

May I suggest it would be better to travel by car or even bicycle, rather than shoestring. And depending on how much you weigh, you may break that shoestring awfully fast while trying to travel on it.

The first thing you should buy is a firearm. There is a good chance nobody will ever see you alive again. Dangerous region. I’m serious.

Just be careful whatever you do and keep some money aside -a contigency fund for unforeseen expenses you never know what might happen I think you owe it to yourself to follow your dream I just wonder if Central America would be the ideal place there are so many exciting places in the world .Have a ball whatever you do

i guess ive been lucky in central amer. never have had any problems. staying in +/-$25/nite hotels and eating $10/day on food i budget about $300-400US a week and yes have some contingency because weather, earthquakes, robbery or who knows what can change your plans and youll need $ to get out from the nearest city.

I’d suggest access to funds rather than carrying that amount cash. You’ll pay fees to take money out abroad (unless you’re with Nationwide / Barclays) but it’s still cheaper than being robbed and losing everything.

I’d say excluding flights that money would last you up to 8-12 months if you are on an old, ratty shoestring rather than a lined, glossy Gucci one.

I’d say you would have a ball in Central America, if possible try and stay away from the major cities and get by on the small towns. That much money should last you at least 8months. I stayed in San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico for 2 months on basically US$10/day (that included US$1.50 for a packet of cigs everyday). Definitely a time to remember.
